What is Contech? Construction Technology, Defined

Contech is short for construction technology: the category of software, hardware, and data tools built for the companies that design and build the physical world. The term covers everything from project information management and BIM software to drones, site sensors, robotics, and AI applied to construction workflows.

What the category covers

Contech is usually grouped by where in the project life cycle a tool works:

  • Design and preconstruction: BIM authoring and coordination tools, estimating and bid management, constructability and clash analysis.
  • Project delivery and the record: project management platforms, project information management (PIM) systems, document control and common data environments, scheduling tools.
  • The field: daily reporting and site capture apps, drones and reality capture, sensors and wearables, equipment tracking.
  • Business operations: ERP and accounting for contractors and design firms, workforce management, insurance and payments products built for construction.

The common thread is that construction work is project-based, document-heavy, and split across many companies on every job. Tools that succeed in the category deal with those conditions rather than fighting them.

Contech versus proptech

The neighboring category, proptech (property technology), serves the ownership and operation of real estate: leasing, asset management, building operations, and transactions. Contech serves the making of the asset. The boundary is the point of handover. Tools for managing an operating building are proptech; tools for designing and building it are contech. Some platforms span both, and the AECO framing (adding owners and operators to AEC) describes that overlap.

Where AI fits

AI entered the category first through narrow tasks: reading drawings, transcribing meetings, classifying photos, and flagging schedule risk. The current generation applies language models to the industry's documentation problem, drafting meeting minutes, filing project email, summarizing RFIs and submittals, and answering questions across a project record. Because construction generates large volumes of unstructured text and images per project, documentation is where AI produces value fastest, and it is the part of contech moving quickest today.

Frequently asked questions

What does contech mean? Contech means construction technology: software, hardware, and data tools built for architecture, engineering, and construction companies.

What is the difference between contech and proptech? Contech serves the design and construction of buildings and infrastructure. Proptech serves the ownership and operation of real estate after handover. The categories meet at the point where a project becomes an operating asset.

Is BIM part of contech? Yes. BIM authoring, coordination, and the standards around them, such as ISO 19650, sit inside the design and preconstruction segment of construction technology.

What are examples of contech? Project information management systems, common data environments, field reporting apps, reality capture drones, estimating software, and AI tools that draft meeting minutes or file project email are all contech.
