Document control in construction is the discipline of managing project documents so that everyone works from the current version and the project keeps a complete, retrievable record of what was issued, to whom, and when. It covers drawings, specifications, contracts, correspondence, RFIs, submittals, transmittals, meeting minutes, and reports, across every company on the project.

## Why the record matters

A construction project is administered in writing. Decisions, instructions, and approvals move through formal documents, and those documents are what gets examined when something goes wrong: a delay claim, a defect dispute, an insurance matter, or litigation years after handover. A firm that cannot produce the RFI response, the approved submittal, or the email chain behind a decision argues from memory against the other side's paper.

Document control also matters before anything goes wrong. Building from a superseded drawing is one of the most expensive routine errors on a project, and it is a document control failure: the current revision existed, and the crew did not have it.
